How to be sustainable at uni

There are so many simple ways to help the environment

and save some money.

You might think living sustainably is time-consuming, takes a lot of effort or costs a fortune. But there are plenty of simple ways to make a difference.

It's easy to waste water without realising it, from leaving the tap running while you brush your teeth to taking long showers after a tiring day at uni. You can cut down by taking shorter showers, turning off the tap while washing up and only running full loads in the washing machine or dishwasher.

You'll probably want some new uni outfits, but swapping fast fashion for second-hand shopping is a great way to be more sustainable and save money. Visit charity shops or browse Facebook Marketplace, Depop and Vinted to give clothes a second life. If you have clothes you no longer wear, donate them to charity, pass them on to family or use a clothing bank. Learning simple repairs like sewing on buttons or patching holes can help clothes last longer.

Make the most of natural daylight and switch off lights and electrical items when you're not using them.

Recycling is a great way to help the planet, but did you know that not all plastics can be recycled? That's why you should try to avoid as many single-use plastics where you can. Don't worry, there's plenty of alternatives that are much more eco-friendly and won't empty your pockets.

Recycling helps the planet, but reducing single-use plastics is even better. Products like the Ecoegg can replace laundry detergent and fabric conditioner for up to 70 washes, saving plastic bottles. You could also swap shower gel for bar soap, use flannels instead of disposable wipes and choose reusable items such as bamboo toothbrushes, metal straws, shopping bags, coffee cups and water bottles. Many universities have free water refill stations, and most uni cafés offer discounts for bringing your own cup.

If you usually catch the bus or taxi, consider walking if your campus is nearby. It's cheaper, reliable and a good way to stay active. Cycling is another eco-friendly option, and many universities or city bike schemes offer affordable bike hire.

These small changes can help protect the environment while saving you money at uni. Little changes really can make a big impact!
